Marco's Boardercross Race at Boreal
(Saturday March 7, 2009)
Cheryl and Sue drove up to meet Katie and Marco at Boreal today. Marco was racing in Boardercross, in the age 18-22 division where he's currently in 1st position nationally for his age group. Marco has plenty of points to qualify for Nationals (he said over 1,000 so far), so he was just having fun racing today. There were three races for Marco in this competition. He took first in one, and third in two, which means he took 3d overall. Cheryl and Sue missed the first race as they were riding a lift up. Here are pictures of Marco during the third race where he took third. He has so many medals, he let Sue keep his bronze from today's USASA competition. There's a few pictures of the fans and all using their various snow transportation modes back down the hill toward the lodge from the Lost Dutchman lift. For more on Marco click on the photo below.

April Competition at Copper Mountain, Colorado
(The Union article Monday, April 13, 2009)
Marco Maynard, a former Nevada Union High School standout and current member of the Squaw Valley snowboard team, was among some of the nation’s top boarders competing at last week’s USA Snowboarding Association Nationals at Copper Mountain, Colo. Maynard made his second start at the nationals in boarder cross and the return trip reaped much better results than his inaugural run. A year ago, Maynard was seeded second in his class after time trials, but crashed in his first heat race to bring an abrupt halt to his hunt for a spot on the podium. This time around the 19-year-old Nevada City native quickly rose through the field of 40 competitors in his class to chase down a third-place finish in the Men Jam’s (18-22 year olds) division. He finished behind champion Billy Pettengill of Waterville, Maine and William Dwyer of West Henrietta, N.Y. Maynard, who was an accomplished boarder in both the slalom and giant slalom competitions as member of the NU Miners team, has since decided to focus solely on racing boarder cross.
Mike Condon, another area racer competing at Copper Mountain, wrapped up an impressive rookie run at nationals with fourth place finish in the slopestyle competition among 20 competitors in the Senior Men’s Division. That finish, combined with the rest of his results, earned him the title of overall Senior Men’s USASA National Champion. Condon, a 30-year-old Nevada City resident, also finished eighth in the half pipe competition. Earlier in the week, as reported in Friday’s edition of The Union, Condon took first place in the Senior Men’s boarder cross competition, along with third place in the slalom and giant slalom.
