Nevada County Historical Society’s “Volunteer’s Picnic”

(Sunday, September 12, 2010)

Saturday’s picnic was a lot of fun. We had excellent 80 degree weather and the conditions were perfect for a picnic. The location was next to the babbling Wolf Creek behind the North Star Mining Museum in the Glenn Jones Park. This picnic has traditionally been a way for the Board of Directors to thank the many volunteers that help keep the society’s museums and library open and the society functioning. We have a lot of dedicated volunteers and we want to say thank you to all of them. We wouldn’t be here without them.

Desmond Gallagher, Dan Ketcham and Wayne Teague were on the organizing committee this year. Wayne planned the logistics, Desmond organized the condiments and table settings, Dan provided the BBQ and burgers. Al & Marilyn Dittman delivered tables, chairs and cold drinks provided by the Railroad Museum. Carolyn Jones-Rogers provided flowers for the tables. Kristi Teague & Carolyn assisted with set up and logistics.

Carolyn prepping burger toppings:

James Ketcham did a fabulous job as master chef, with assistance from Wayne,
Dan & Carolyn. The burgers and gourmet hotdogs were delicious.

All the board members pitched in to provide salads and desserts.

The homemade strawberry ice cream from the Ketchams topped off the desserts
perfectly.

As a special surprise to those in attendance was an opportunity to see the 30 foot Pelton Wheel in motion for the first time since the 1930’s!! Bob Shoemaker and some of his volunteers have been working to get the wheel moving again so it can be better enjoyed by the visiting public. Quite an accomplishment guys!

We also had our first look at the huge bellows that was restored by our ace
mechanic, retired engineer, Rolf Laessig.

This was a great opportunity to have a fun, casual get together; and have a chance to meet and get to know all those dedicated folks that give their time and energy to enable the Historical Society to preserve and teach history to our members, our youngsters, and the general public.

And yes, we do have room for more volunteers
and would love to have you join us.
