More Snow

(Friday February 13, 2009

This morning we woke up to sixteen inches of new snow.

Gus Graham, Chris Ribble, Mike Whipple, Ken Bartsch and Matthew Reeves donned warm clothing and stepped into waist-high waders lined with heavy material and climbed into the Cascade Canal to shovel out the slush. The water wasn’t above 40 degrees. There’s no other way to do it.

There was so much snow and ice that plugged the  ditch and caused it to overflow across the Dunham's field. In the former days of the Republic ditch tenders used Mom and Val's little cabin to keep warm during their all night vigil making sure the ditch didn't plug up and flood. There are two bad turns where piled up snow causes the water to dam up. There used to be a short flume and spillway over Wolf Creek that made it easier to get rid of the plug at the second  turn. It was replaced with a large pipe.

After finishing their cool task, the crew's getting ready to leave.

We can't see the rock wall anymore.

Sue is plowing some trails with her ATV she bought at the Kirby fund raiser last year.

Now she's clearing snow off the garbage cans...and plans on doing the same off the mailboxes.

Saturday's Valentine's Day

It snowed another five inches last night. Sometime during the night the power went off for several hours. This morning Annie could hardly wait to go get the newspaper.

I discovered that 21 inches deep snow goes over my boots if I don't stay in Mel's tracks.

Cheryl's trudging along in the ATV path with a post she wants trimmed in the shop. Sue was supposed to transport her. Looks like they finally make the connection...Bucky allegedly loves to ride on it too.
